The second most Venetian celebration (after the Redentore) will take place on next Thursday, November 21st: the Feast of Madonna della Salute (our Lady of Good Health). In 1630 a dreadful plague epidemy affected the city of Venice. The Doge asked the Virgin Mary the intercession to put an end to the plague, promising to build a church in her honour as soon as the city were safe. The ex voto is the 1687 baroque church, designed by Baldassarre Longhena, that we can still see nowadays. A temporary boat bridge is constructed every year to bring the pilgrims to the church, connecting Santa Maria del Giglio with Punta della Dogana.
If you want to experience this unique athmosphere you can join the group of students from Prof. Pes’ course, who will visit the Ghetto at 10 am and afterwards will head to the Basilica della Salute. For this last activity, the meeting point is at 11 at Campo del Ghetto Nuovo, just outside the Jewish Museum.
