A film by Lina Wertmüller, 1972, starring Giancarlo Giannini and Mariangela Melato.

Mimì, an hardheaded Left-wing Sicilian worker emigrated to Turin, is contended by his flower-power communist Northern lover (the Mafia), by his wife and, once back in Catania, by the wife of an officer of the Tax Police in an intricate and surreal plot. The film was presented during the 1972 Cannes Film Festival.

You will be divided into two groups and you will be given all the useful instructions to start the treasure hunt.

You will have to demonstrate that you have found solutions.

Remember to bring with you a camera and/or a smart phone.

At the end of the game there will be a nice surprise for the winners!

To confirm your participation, please sign the roster on the classroom corridor before Tuesday, 28 April at 5 pm.

Join the Treasure Hunt, it is a chance to discover Venice from a different point of view!

VIU Movie series: Turn Left at the End of the World

A film by Avi Nesher, 2004, starring Sara Eden and Avi Nesher.

In the 1960′s, a family from India moves to a desert neighborhood in Southern Israel. The family’s eldest and beautiful daughter discovers friendship and romance with a lovely local French girl.

The film explores the hardships and surprises that come with the integration of multiple families from different ethnic backgrounds and their struggle with immigration and prejudice.

The film participated in several international film festivals and received several awards.

The activity is compulsory for students attending the course S1517: Cities, Global Change and Sustainable Development.

For all students enrolled in this course, the visit is sponsored by VIU.

Program:

1.30 pm - meeting point in front of the boat stop of San Zaccaria (line 20) and walk to the Arsenale

  • brief introduction to the Arsenale and explanation of the projects for the redevelopment of the area
  • visit to the tower of Porta Nuova
  • visit to the area of the National Research Council
  • visit to the open-air area of Arsenale nord

The visit lasts approximately 3 hours (ending time at 5 pm).

The activity is reserved for students attending the course S1502: Art and Architecture in Renaissance Venice.

For all students enrolled in this course, the visit is sponsored by VIU, just sign your name on the list in corridor 9. 

Program:

9.30 am - meeting point in Campo dei Frari, in front of the Entrance of the Basilica

  • Visit to the Basilica dei Frari
  • Visit to San Zaccaria Church
  • Visit to the Accademia Galleries

The visit lasts approximately 6 hours (ending time at 3.30 pm).

Basilica Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari: is one of the most important sacred buildings owing to the wealth of artworks that it houses. The interior features precious paintings such as Titian’s altar, the triptych of the Virgin and Saints by Giovanni Bellini, and the wooden statue of St John the Baptist by Donatello.

The Church of San Zaccaria is dedicated to Saint Zechariah, the father of John the Baptist. The church houses one of the most famous work by Giovanni Bellini, the San Zaccaria Altarpiece and it was particularly famous for its collection of relics, among which are those of Athanasius of Alexandria and a piece of the True Cross. Nearly every wall of the church is covered with paintings by 17th and 18th century artists.

The Accademia Galleries are located in the prestigious centre of the Scuola Grande of Santa Maria della Carità, inside you can admire a very rich collection of Venetian, Bizantine, Gothic and Renaissance paintings of the major artists of that time.

VIU Movies series: Ferris Bullers’s Day Off

An American film by John Hughes, 1986, starring Matthew Broderick, Mia Sara, Alan Ruck, Jennifer Grey and Jeffrey Jones.

The film received critical acclaim from critics and audiences. In 2014, the film was selected for preservation in the National Film Registry as per being deemed “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant”.

Ferris Bueller (Matthew Broderick) is a legend in his school thanks to his uncanny skill at cutting classes and getting away with it. Intending to make one last grand duck-out before graduation, Ferris calls in sick, “borrows” a Ferrari, and embarks on a one-day bacchanal through the streets of Chicago and creatively avoids his high-school principal, his resentful sister and his parents.
