Come and discover the historic Venetian Ghetto and the stunning Jewish Museum!

The Venetian Ghetto was establish in the 1516. Despite the isolation the Jewish increased significantly, requiring the creation of new housing. Due to the lack of space, the buildings were expanded in height: up to the 8th floor!

The Jewish Museum in Venice is not only an exhibition place but it’s a kind of diffused museum merged with the city. It’s quite small but hosts a rich collection
started in 1954 by the jewish community. Inside its rooms you will see textile articles, object related to the cult and the Jewish liturgy and you will discover the history of the Venetian Jewish,
told by objects and pictures.

The visit is highly recommended for the students of S1601 History of Venice and it will be sponsored by VIU.

Participation is only for students that have signed up since the seats are limited.

Join the 71st anniversary of the italian liberation!

 A walk through italian history of resistence in Venice: Campo San Canciano – Bruno Crovato; Ponte dei Sartori – Luigi Borgato; Calle Priuli – Giuseppe Tramontin; Fondamenta San Felice – Ubaldo Belli; Calle Colombina – Piero Favretti; Campiello del Magazin – Augusto Picutti; Corte Correra – Manfredi Azzarita. The cortage will send at Campo del Ghetto Novo at 11.30 am.
The walk will be accompanied by the Choir April 25th – Mezzalira Olivolo and will reach at approximately 11:30 am Campo del Ghetto Nuovo where it will end with a commemoration and a final concert. 

This activity is free of charge and open to all interested students and faculty and is highly recommended for students enrolled in S1601 History of Venice and A1603 Italian Contemporary History in Films.

Did you know about Porto Marghera…?

At the beginning of the 90s Venice was considered unsuitable as industrial center due to the lack of an appropriate area in which to build it.
On February 1st, 1917 the “Sindacato di Studi per Imprese Elettrometallurgiche di Venezia” was created. This council commissioned to the engineer Enrico Coen Cagli to outline a project for the Bottenigo area.Cagli plan was to divide it in three parts: industrial, commercial and residential district. The works to create the new Petrol Chemical Center began in the early 1919.

 Compulsory attendance and costs

The visit is compulsory for students enrolled in Globalization, Environment and Sustainable Development (S1618), History of Venice (S1601) and suggested for students enrolled in the course Management of the Industrial and Crafts Heritage (S1625). The visit costs for those students are sponsored by VIU.
Other interested students or faculty can participate upon availability for a fee of 7 euros.

 Program:

09.15am:  Introductory lecture to the History of Porto Marghera
10.00am:  Departure by private boat from San Servolo
11.00am – 1.00pm: visit by private boat to the Industrial Port
1.30pm:  estimated time for the end of the visit

The visit will end at Tronchetto (this will allow students from the Globalization, Environment and Sustainable Development (S1618) attending the consequent visit to Contarina spa to be at the meeting point on time).

April 9-10, 2016 there will be a solidarity walk around Venice in which thousands of people will participate. (Please note that Venice streets therefore might be a little overcrowded!)
It will be a day of sustainable tourism, discovering Venice’s art and history, its hidden corners and its famous places, while supporting – this year – the Salesian community of Damasco in Syria.

Piazza della Signoria is the central square of Florence, site of the civil power. Palazzo Vecchio, designed by Arnolfo di Cambio, is the most important element of the square together with the so called Loggia della Signoria in which gothic and classic elements are combined. Piazza del Duomo is composed by Giotto’s bell tower, the outstanding cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore built by Arnolfo di Cambio, Francesco Talenti and Filippo Brunelleschi whose dome is still considered an artistic and engineering masterpieces, and the Battistero di S. Giovanni with Andrea Pisano’s door.
Uffizi Gallery was the ancient government headquarters. The gallery hosts a superb collection of priceless art works arising from the Medici’s collection enriched, over the centuries, thanks to donations and acquisitions. The museum is divided into sections which are dedicated to different painters and styles. Inside this rooms you will see some of the greatest masterpieces of masters such as Cimabue, Giotto, Mantegna, Leonardo da Vinci, Tiziano, Botticelli, Caravaggio, Parmigianino, Canaletto, Rubens and many more…

 PARTICIPATION

This trip is part of the Supplementary Art Course and is compulsory if you are attending the Supplementary Art Course for 2 ECTS credits.
The visit is open to all interested VIU student and professor. To participate sign the roster on the door of the classroom corridor by Thursday, April 6.

  • 2:00 p.m.   Entrance to Uffizi and guided visit with Prof. Paolieri
  • 6:30 p.m.   Estimated time for the end of the visit in Florence

COSTS

Entrance tickets: VIU will sponsor the entrance tickets for all the students attending the Supplementary Art Course.

Transport:
The transportation costs are on your own. You can reach Florence on your own and then meet Prof. Paolieri at the Piazza della Signoria.
You can reach Florence by train (www.trenitalia.com). We suggest you to purchase the tickets as soon as possible to avoid the rise of the prizes.
