VIU movie series: Top Gun

Lieutenant Pete “Maverick” Mitchell is an expert United States Naval Aviator. When he encounters a pair of MiGs over the Persian Gulf, his wingman is clearly outflown and freaks. On almost no fuel, Maverick is able to talk him back down to the carrier. When his wingman turns in his wings, Maverick is moved up in the standings and sent to the Top Gun Naval Flying School. There he fights the attitudes of the other pilots and an old story of his father’s death in combat that killed others due to his father’s error. Maverick struggles to be the best pilot, stepping on the toes of his other students and in another way to Charlie Blackwood, a civilian instructor to whom he is strongly attracted.

Visit to Renaissance Florence

The Midterm Weekend to Florence will take place on October 23-24, 2015 (Friday and Saturday)

The activities on Friday, October 23 are part of the Supplementary Art Course “Introduction to Italian Renaissance Painting” and will be guided by prof. Paolieri.
The activities on Saturday, October 24th are extra activities organized by VIU. 

PROGRAM

Friday, October 23​

Meeting point: 11am at Piazza della Signoria, Firenze.

11.00 am – 1.00 pm: Visit of Piazza della Signoria, Cappella Brancace, and the exteriors of Duomo, Baptistery

1.00 pm – 5.30 pm: Visit to the Uffizi Galleries
In the evening: VIU dinner (optional)

Saturday, October 24

09.00 am – 10.30 am Guided Visit to Workshop of semi-precious stones (one of the famous artistic workshops of the Italian Renaissance)

11.00 am – 1.00 pm Guided Walking Tour “Renaissance Florence” – Santa Maria Novella Church, Cathedral Of Santa Maria del Fiore (The Duomo), Piazza della Signoria, Church of Santa Croce.

End of the Visit

 

You can choose in advance (when signing up) if to attend only Friday or both days.You can decide if you want to organize transport and accommodation on your own terms or take the VIU “package”.

The VIU “package”  has a cost of 100 euro and includes:

Transport: Venice/Florence (both ways: departure)

Accommodation: (1 night in shared room in Hostel)

All entrance tickets (Uffizi, Workshop of Semi-precious Stones, Guided Walking Tour)

 

The students who decide to organize the transport and accommodation itself will have to reimburse only the entrance tickets.

For students attending the Supplementary Art Course “Introduction to Italian Renaissance Painting” the entrance tickets for the Uffizi are sponsored by VIU.

The visit is open to all VIU students and faculty.

To participate, please sign the roster on the door of the classroom corridor and bring the participation fee to the Front Office by Tuesday, October 20 at 12 am.

The course consists in four lectures and a site visit to Florence. It is open to VIU students and externals. Auditors are admitted.

Visit to Venice Lagoon, Pellestrina, Murazzi, Ca’ Roman​

Friday, October 16th

Meeting point: 9am at the San Servolo boat stop

We will travel throught the Venice Lagoon by private boat and visit:

the MOSE (new artificial barrier to protect the lagoon)
the Museum of South Lagoon in Pellestrina,
the Murazzi (lagoon barrier system)
the natural oasis in Ca’ Roman.
We plan to return to San Servolo at about 3.30 pm.

The visit is open to all VIU students and faculty. The cost of the visit is 15 euro per person and includes transportation and the entrance tickets.
The visit is compulsory for students of the courses “History of Venice” and “Training in UNESCO World Heritage”. For students attending one of these courses, the visit is sponsored by VIU.

To participate, sign the list on the door of the classroom corridor and bring the participation fee to the Front Office by Tuesday, October 13th at 3 pm.

MOVIE: Always Sanchōme no Yūhi (“Always: Sunset on Third Street”)

(“Always: Sunset on Third Street”) A Japanese movie directed by Takashi Yamazaki, starring Maki Horikita and Hidetaka Yoshioka.
This movie is based on Ryōhei Saigan manga Sanchōme no Yūhi and tells the story of a small community in Tokyo during the post-war period (in 1958).
It won many prizes, such as the Japanese Academy Award for Best Film, Director, Actor and Screenplay in 2006.

Open class of the course Sports, Culture and Society: Special Capoeira Workshop​

Capoeira workshop

Come join the Sports, Culture and Society class for a special capoeira workshop on Wed Oct 14th from 1:30 – 3:00pm.

Capoeira is a dynamic Afro-Brazilian martial art that combines dance, fight, play, acrobatics and music.
It was created by enslaved Africans in Brazil several hundred years ago and today has become a popular global practice.
The workshop will be led by Contramestre Marquinho, an accomplished Brazilian instructor who has been living and teaching in Venice for many years.
The worskshop will be held in the the inner courtyard (if the weather is nice) or in the large meeting room next to the inner courtyard (Sala Basaglia).  Please wear comfortable clothes and shoes to move in.  During the workshop you will learn some of the basic capoeira movement and music.
If you would like to learn more about capoeira’s history and culture, you may also attended Professor Katya Wesolowski’s presentation about it on Monday Oct 12th from 1:30-3pm in 9C.

Conversation with Pedro Lasch and members of Biennale Urbana and Associazione Teatro Marinoni

Open Class of the course Globalization, Ethics, Welfare and Human Rights

Visual artist and Duke professor Pedro Lasch and Italian members of Biennale Urbana and Associazione Teatro Marinoni will visit this class to present a current collaboration they have developed in Lido as an extension of a work produced for the Creative Time Summit and 56th Venice Biennale. Learning about many relevant aspects of globalization and contemporary social practice through the project’s various methods of fusing flags and transposing anthems between countries and languages, students will also discover opportunities for them right in Venice, Lido, and other nearby places. These may be linked to the Humanities Writ Large program at Duke, the ongoing artistic work of the Biennale Urbana, or the environmental and historical rescue efforts of the Associazione Teatro Marinoni in Lido.

Art conference by Han Meilin

VIU organizes in collaboration with Ca’ Foscari University a meeting with an artist of international renown: Han Meilin, Chinese painter and sculptor.
Han Meilin has been appointed the UNESCO award of Artist for Peace, that will be delivered during an important ceremony in Paris on October 13, 2015.Ambassador Umberto Vattani, President of Venice International University, and Michele Bugliesi, Rector of Ca’ Foscari University Venice, are pleased to invite you and any person interested at the lecture Art emanates from heart. Han Meilin’s journey in the world of art“on October 7, 2015 at 4.30 pm, Aula Magna Ca’ Dolfin, Dorsoduro 3855 (near campo Santa Margherita and Ca’ Foscari main building).
